RICA

Program Overview

The RICA program focuses on developing the content area knowledge that is tested on Domains I-IV of the exam.  Through the tutoring sessions examinees will build their knowledge of reading instruction and assessment for grades K-8.  The program incorporates homework assignments consisting of several multiple choice questions, essays, and case studies that are aligned with the exam items on the RICA.  All instruction is individualized and tutors provide detailed feedback to enhance your test-taking skills and strategies.

Domain I: Ongoing Assessment and Planning for Reading Instruction
 
  • 14 Multiple Choice questions, one essay
Domain 2: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Concepts about Print, Spelling
 
  • 21 Multiple Choice questions, one essay
Domain 3: Reading Comprehension, Independent Reading, Content   Area Literacy, Literary Response and Analysis
 
  • 21 Multiple Choice questions, one essay
Domain 4: Oral and Written Language Development, Vocabulary  Development, English Structure
 
  • 14 Multiple Choice questions, one essay

In total, the RICA consists of 70 Multiple Choice questions, 4 essays (2 essays are 50 words in length, 2 are 150 words in length), and one case study (300 words in length). 

RICA Scoring

A score of 81 out of 120 is needed to pass the exam.  A total of 60 multiple choice questions are used to compute the overall score.  The 50 word essays are worth 6 points each, while the 150 word essays are worth 12 points each.  The case study is worth a total of 24 points.
